Prof Tim Noakes is an absolute legend, ranked in the top 3 scientists in South Africa. He has run over 70 marathons and ultra marathons and has written several books on exercise and diet and has advised many top athletes including the likes of the Springbok rugby team and swimmer, Lewis Pugh. Amongst his books is the Lore of Running in which he recommended carb loading until one day he was diagnosed with diabetes which went against everything he thought he knew about diet and exercise. Despite following his own dietary advice his fasting glucose levels barely dropped and he started taking Metformin to control his disease. This led him to realising that is was actually carbohydrates that were the problem and he has campaigned ever since to change eating guidelines and is often heard saying, I got it all wrong in The Lore of Running, don’t follow my advice in the book!
By eliminating a food group there was much scepticism and Prof Noakes was accused of promoting a fad diet and was even accused of misconduct. The Health Professions Council of South Africa held a hearing about the allegations which they lost and again on appeal and he was acquitted twice by two different judging panels because they couldn’t prove that what he was saying was actually wrong.
The Noakes foundation was set up in 2014, a non profit corporation and public benefit organisation that supports academic free speech and independent scientific research for the truth. They have raised funds to research the Insulin Resistance (IR) paradigm, low carb high fat (LCHF) lifestyles and also launched The Nutrition Network delivering online, accredited education covering the latest science and research in the field of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction.
You can follow both Prof Tim Noakes and The Noakes Foundation on Facebook, look out for their live Q&A sessions and presentations, always worth listening in to. The Real Meal Revolution is a very good book full of LCHF recipes which we can highly recommend.
