Mark’s story
I’m not the world’s best writer but here is a snippet of my Keto journey to date.
I worked as a Personal Trainer back in the 1990s in London so always had a keen interest in health and lifestyle management.
Back in the summer of 2018 I took a family holiday to Llandudno and I aggravated an old knee injury whilst walking great Orme.
I took a visit to my doctor when I got back, he advised if I didn’t lose weight I would need a knee replacement, my breathing was bad from smoking in my early years, I was prediabetic and my kidney function was the worst it’s been. I suffered terrible fatigue, and so called Cholesterol issues, I have several autoimmune issues to add to the mix, so things weren’t looking too promising.
I got back home and for one month stuck to a conventional high protein low fat diet, moderate exercise and lost 14lbs in weight, I had no shift for weeks after, upping exercise (cardio and weights) didn’t work, cutting back calories didn’t work and I still felt bloated.
I browsed, read some success stories, and found some new motivation. I started Keto and in the first 4 months I lost 60lbs of bodyweight and dropped down from a 45inch waist down to 30inches. I was experimenting with Keto, I made all the mistakes, I ate too much protein, too many hidden carbs, not enough fats and nasty sweeteners.
The more I read and learned my plan started to come together, I tweaked my macros, cut out gluten, milk products became obsessed with this newfound feeling of energy which I had tapped into and had to replace my wardrobe (more expensive than the food bill).
I had my bloods done 4 months later, my kidney function was the best it’s ever been, cholesterol was now under control (it was up due to long term medication), my energy was through the roof, exercise was easier, pain in my knees disappeared completely, and I wasn’t pre diabetic anymore.
I battled for years with my local GP and Oncologist (I had cancer 12 years ago before my journey started) My GP and endocrinologist have been trying to get me on statins for years, luckily my Dr in London advised me against not going on them, simply explained the risk assessment and encouraged me to continue with Keto.
I still live with autoimmune issues but life is much more manageable now.
I took a keen interest in food and became obsessed with getting it right, for the first time something finally worked. I enjoyed making, prepping and photographing food. Things finally started to fall into place.
It’s not been easy this last 6 years, I’ve had many setbacks but tried very hard to stick between the KPC (Keto, Paleo and Carnivore) eating regimes.
